Roof Ice Dams

Long icicles hanging from your roof may look pretty sparkling in the winter sun, but are evidence of the dreaded ice dam!    

Ice dams form when heat escapes into your attic and warms up the underside of the shingles and then melts the snow there.  The water then flows down the roof, refreezing when it hits a colder area causing an ice dam to form.    The dam stops melting snow from draining off the roof and the water pools behind the dam.   The result?  Mold, rotted sheathing, leaks and compromised insulation, interior water damage, damaged gutters and shingles….lots of problems costing lots of money and time to repair.    

So what can you do to avoid ice dams – and what can you do if you have one?
